‘The eyes of your assassin. They stay in your mind’s eye until death’
Rwanda, April 1994. For thirteen days Révérien Rurangwa hid in silence with his family in a hut on the hillside in Mugina. Eventually they were hunted down by their Hutu neighbours and in minutes forty-three members of his family were massacred before his eyes.
Révérien was the only one to escape, missing a hand and an eye. He was just fifteen years old. In this extraordinary memoir he reflects upon his experience as a survivor uprooted in exile, and attempts to confront the enigmatic power of evil which has steered the course of his life.
Part of the proceeds from the sale of Genocide will go to Ibuka-Memoire et Justice, which supports victims of the genocide. Rurangwa is the charity’s Vice-President.
"Reverien Rurangwa has written an extraordinarily powerful, moving
and humbling book. 'Genocide' should be required reading for every
diplomat, journalist, aid worker and UN official dealing with Africa." - Adam LeBor, author of
Complicity with Evil: The United Nations
in the Age of Modern Genocide.
"More than an individual tale of survival – it touches on the nature of evil and the meaning of forgiveness … I would recommend this memoir to anyone who reflects on the monstrous crime of genocide, and the complex emotions which make us human." – Lindsey Hilsum,
International Editor, Channel 4 News.
"Rurangwa’s anguished cry for justice – that seems to echo around the Swiss mountains where he has sought refuge – and his frank exploration of his place in such an incomprehensible event, is brave and deeply moving…It might not be a bad idea to sling a dozen copies of this book onto the desks of the UN Security Council. Let them know the consequences of their inaction." – David Belton,
Writer and Producer of Shooting Dogs.
